Final Celebration Event – Dec 2006
12 th Dec 2006
On Tuesday 12th December, Jerwood Space played host to an event recognising the completion of a 2-year, £29.5m London-wide programme. Regional key skills and employment stakeholders were in attendance to celebrate the impact of 65 projects that has helped more than 20,000 Londoners into training and jobs. Disadvantaged and excluded groups across London such as the long-term unemployed, ethnic minorities, disabled people and women have particularly benefited from learning opportunities granted by the Pan London 1 programme, funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the European Social Fund (ESF). Additionally, over 2,500 Small and Medium Size companies, including the voluntary and community sector, have benefited from skills-based assistance and capacity building to foster their competitiveness.
This programme, the first regional ESF initiative co-funded by the LSC, has therefore had an important impact on the London's economy and regional skills priorities.
Mary Conneely, LSC Director for Regeneration, commented:
"I am delighted to see the key results that have been achieved. The Pan London 1 programme represented the first time the London LSCs were able to pool a significant amount of ESF in order to make an impact at a regional level in London. Some fantastic project partnerships have allowed improved access to those target groups which are dispersed in small groups across London and so couldn't be effectively targeted within local ESF programmes. It allowed the ESF to fund organisations who work with groups that are furthest removed from the labour market such as refugees and asylum seekers; those people who were homeless."
One of the key features of the programme was that it helped the LSC in its commitment to integrate skills with regeneration by helping nearly 1000 learners to gain a Skills for Life achievement. An additional 41 regional projects have started from August 2006 and a further 16 will start in early 2007 under a further round which builds on Pan London 1's achievements. The Pan London 2 Programme, also funded by the ESF and the LSC, is set to benefit 20,000 learners by its end in July 2008.
